Northern suburban Chicago has several well-regarded high school districts. Families doing serious research often compare D125 (Stevenson) against District 211 (Palatine, Schaumburg, Fremd, Conant, Hoffman Estates) and District 214 (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling). Here's an honest look at how they stack up and why families who compare carefully tend to land in D125.

Transparency note

I work exclusively in D125, so I have an obvious perspective here. I've done my best to use publicly available ranking data for all three districts. You should do your own research using the sources linked throughout this post.

The Rankings — What the Data Says

Rankings vary by source and methodology, but across multiple platforms, Stevenson consistently outperforms both D211 and D214 schools in overall ranking:

What Families Tell Me When They're Comparing

I've worked with many families who initially considered both D211 and D214 before landing in D125. The reasons they give for choosing Stevenson tend to fall into a few categories:

  • Ranking consistency — Stevenson ranks #1 in Illinois on Niche 2025. Fremd is strong but doesn't consistently top statewide rankings. For families where the absolute best matters, Stevenson wins.
  • Single-school district — D125 has one high school. D211 has five and D214 has six. When you're in D125, you're not wondering if you got "the good one" in the district — there's only one, and it's exceptional.
  • Performing arts — Stevenson's programs are nationally recognized. For families with kids in theater, orchestra, or band, this matters enormously.
  • Home value protection — D125 has one school whose reputation drives real estate demand. Buyers specifically search for D125 addresses. This creates a more focused demand signal for your home than a multi-school district where buyers might prefer one campus over another.

Where D211 and D214 Have Advantages

This wouldn't be an honest comparison without acknowledging where the other districts have real strengths.

  • Price — Palatine (D211) and Arlington Heights (D214) offer lower home prices for comparable school quality. If budget is the primary driver and rankings are somewhat interchangeable, D211 in particular offers strong value.
  • Inventory — D211 and D214 communities have more housing inventory than D125. If you need a very specific home type and size, you'll have more options in these larger districts.
  • Location — For buyers working in Schaumburg or Hoffman Estates, D211 geography may be more practical than D125's Lake County location.

The Bottom Line

D125 is the right choice for families who want Illinois's #1-ranked school, value a single-school district, have children with performing arts interests, or are treating the home as a long-term investment where school-driven demand matters. D211 is the right choice for buyers who want strong schools at a lower price point. D214 offers respectable schools with more geographic flexibility.

If you're comparing all three and Stevenson keeps coming out on top in your research — trust that instinct. The families who move to D125 for Stevenson don't tend to regret it.
